Time for a Nuclear Energy Revival: A Bright Future for the Philippines
In a powerful address filled with hope and determination, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. has declared that the Philippines stands at a pivotal moment. It’s time to explore nuclear energy production once again. With nearly 200 energy projects on the horizon, the administration is committed to enhancing our country’s power supply while working tirelessly to lower the rising cost of electricity.
During his fifth State of the Nation Address, Marcos shed light on the extensive potential of nuclear energy, not just for electricity but also for applications in medicine, agriculture, and environmental sustainability. “Pushing the envelope further, perhaps it is time for us to revisit nuclear energy production,” he emphasized, expressing confidence that harnessing this powerful resource could significantly bolster our energy security and bring relief to Filipino households struggling with high power rates.
Safety is paramount. Marcos assured citizens, “Titiyakin nating ito ay ligtas” (We will ensure that this is safe). He committed to transparently communicating the benefits of nuclear energy to the public, making sure everyone understands the positive impacts it can bring to our lives.
With an impressive pipeline of approximately 200 energy projects across the nation, the combined capacity is nearly 10,000 megawatts (MW). This includes 45 projects already completed, with 31 more expected to finish this year. The remaining 124 are on track for completion by 2028. Along with this, an additional 1,700 megawatts will enhance our energy storage systems, fortifying our energy security even further.
“Ang mga proyektong ito ay napabilis nang dahil sa mga bagong patakaran at proseso na nagpapadali ng pagnenegosyo dito sa ating bansa” (These projects have been expedited because of new policies and processes that simplify doing business here in our country), he stated, showcasing the government’s dedication to promoting growth both for local and foreign investors.
Challenges remain, particularly as the Philippines continues to rely heavily on imported fuel. Geopolitical tensions, such as the recent attacks by the US and Israel on Iran, have put our energy supply at risk. The Department of Energy is actively pursuing development of several nuclear power plants, focusing on locations like Bataan, Pangasinan, and Palawan. Their goal? To integrate 1,200 megawatts of nuclear energy into the nation’s power mix initially and gradually increase that to 4,800 megawatts by 2050.
Further cementing this commitment, President Marcos announced plans for an independent agency dedicated to overseeing the safe use of nuclear energy and radiation sources in our country. This step signifies a major move towards establishing a secure and regulated nuclear framework.
