Supporting Our Heroes: President Marcos Affirms Commitment to OFWs
In a heartfelt statement during his fifth State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. emphasized the Philippine government’s unwavering dedication to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) affected by the escalating tensions in the Middle East. His words not only reflect the government’s initiatives but also resonate deeply with the emotions and challenges faced by millions of Filipino families.
Since the onset of the crisis earlier this year, more than 12,000 OFWs have been repatriated, providing relief to those caught in turbulent circumstances. The government has also extended assistance to over 140,000 OFWs, offering vital resources such as food, financial aid, medical care, and shelter.
“This is a crucial mission for the government, given that more than two and a half million Filipinos are working in the Middle East,” Marcos articulated, highlighting the significant number of our compatriots who toil far from home, often facing adverse conditions.
As the President delved deeper into the issue, he expressed heartfelt concern for those affected, stating, “We continue our coordination with other countries and our support for OFWs to ensure their safety, especially given that some of our fellow Filipinos have died or gone missing in the Middle East.” The weight of these words hangs heavy, a stark reminder of the risks taken by those who seek better opportunities abroad.
To assist returning workers in reintegrating into society, the government has launched the AKSYON Fund and the OWWA-Kabuhayan program. These initiatives are designed to help them relaunch their livelihoods. Marcos stressed the importance of linking OFWs to the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) and the Bayanihan para sa Balikbayang Manggagawa job fairs, illuminating pathways to new beginnings.
Furthermore, he announced a special initiative for returning OFW teachers, stating, “Our returning OFW teachers will be entering public schools where they are needed the most. Because in the Philippines, they are the Ma’ams and Sirs.” This affirmation not only recognizes the invaluable contributions of our educators but also emphasizes the government’s commitment to harness their skills for the benefit of local communities.
