Senators Now Hold Key After Marcos’ Special Session Call

A Call for Unity: President Marcos Jr. Urges Senate Action Amid Leadership Disputes

In a pivotal moment for the Philippine political landscape, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. recently called on Congress to convene a special session. This urgent request comes at a time when the Senate is grappling with internal division and leadership disputes. As the President reaches out to lawmakers, the real question remains: will the senators step up for the good of the country?

Press Officer Claire Castro, speaking at a recent briefing, conveyed the sentiment of uncertainty surrounding the Senate’s current situation. “Right now, we are unsure of what’s happening in the Senate. But the President wishes for order to prevail because they really need to get to work,” she stated.

Castro emphasized that the onus is now on the senators. “The President has done his part by calling this special session. It’s now up to the senators to fulfill their obligations. The ball is in their court,” she added.

A Call for Stability Amidst Discontent

On June 17, President Marcos issued Proclamation 1318, urging Congress to assemble during its sine die adjournment. He stressed the importance of addressing priority legislation and appointments, crucial for the nation’s progress.

But the Senate isn’t merely facing legislative duties; it is engulfed in a leadership clash between the bloc led by Senate President Pro Tempore Sherwin Gatchalian and Senator Alan Peter Cayetano. Tensions escalated when Gatchalian dismissed a proposal from Cayetano aimed at ensuring smooth Senate operations.

In a revealing statement, Gatchalian noted concerns regarding a gathering of 18 individuals claiming to be former Philippine Marines, underscoring the need for official proceedings to be authentic and accountable.

Serving the People, Not Power

In her commentary, Castro highlighted an essential truth: “Government officials must serve the people, not pursue power for its own sake.” Reflecting on the challenges facing the nation, she poignantly exclaimed, “This is not the moment for Congress to be fragmented. They should be a unifying force for the Filipino people.”

The core belief shared by the President is clear: public service should put citizens at the forefront, not politicians who crave authority and control.

Preparing for ‘Dirty Tricks’

As discussions heat up, Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, aligned with the Gatchalian bloc, warned of potential “dirty tricks” from Senator Cayetano during the upcoming special session. Castro responded with an intention to shed light on Cayetano’s previous conduct while holding power as Speaker of the House.

“If they’re ready for the underhanded tactics of Alan Cayetano, that’s promising news. It indicates a pattern we’ve seen before,” she remarked. “From the Senate to the House of Representatives, where he clung to his position despite a term-sharing agreement, it’s clear that the history speaks for itself.”

Unity in Action

As the nation watches closely, the stakes remain high. The public’s hope is for a Senate that rises above personal ambitions and acts in the best interest of the Filipino people. The call for unity is echoing louder than ever; the question now is whether the Senate will answer.

In these challenging times, it’s crucial that lawmakers remember their roles as servants of the people and not mere players in a political game. The future of the Philippines hangs in the balance, and unity is the path forward.
