Demands for Clarity Amidst Controversy: Romualdez’s Camp Responds to Bureau of Immigration Claims
In a dramatic turn of events, the camp of former House Speaker Martin Romualdez made a bold stand on Friday, calling for the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to retract and apologize for what they deemed a “baseless” claim. This claim suggested that Romualdez sought to leave the country despite ongoing travel restrictions imposed by the Sandiganbayan.
Romualdez, who represents Leyte’s 1st District, finds himself under serious scrutiny as he faces an investigation by the Office of the Ombudsman. On Saturday, Commissioner Viado reaffirmed Sandoval’s original remarks, clarifying that the reference to alleged travel plans dated back to April 2026 and was merely a response to legitimate media inquiries. He emphasized, “The Bureau’s response was not an initiation of public discussion on this matter.”
Adding fuel to the fire, Attorney Viado suggested that Romualdez was fully aware of the travel restrictions outlined in immigration records. The lawyers for Romualdez pushed back, stating that discussions surrounding travel restrictions should not be matters for public speculation, especially if they’re based on unverified or false information. They hinted at potential legal action if the BI did not take corrective measures.
In response to the allegations, the BI issued a statement emphasizing their commitment to honest and accurate public communication. “We will continue to fulfill our responsibilities professionally, impartially, and in accordance with the law,” Viado stated, reaffirming their dedication to good governance and the rule of law.
