Romania Stands Strong with Families of Fallen Filipino Seafarers
In a heartfelt statement on Thursday, the Romanian government reaffirmed its commitment to support the families of Filipino seafarers who tragically lost their lives in the Black Sea amidst the ongoing conflict between Russian and Ukrainian forces. Raed Arafat, the State Secretary and Head of Romania’s Department for Emergency Situations, extended his deepest condolences, making it clear that Romania would provide unwavering assistance.
“We are truly sorry for what has happened,” Arafat expressed compassionately. “You can count on Romania’s continued support—whether in response to this incident or in any future emergencies.” His words reflect a commitment not only to the current crisis but also to long-term solidarity.
A Disturbing Incident
Earlier this month, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) reported multiple incidents that affected a total of 236 Filipino seafarers on 17 vessels in the Black Sea. This heartbreaking toll includes three who tragically lost their lives, another 15 who were injured, and one individual who remains missing. Thankfully, 217 others have been accounted for and deemed safe.
Among those injured, nine have already been repatriated to the Philippines, offering a glimmer of relief amid the tragedy. As families mourn, the Romanian government is also moving swiftly to expedite the process of issuing death certificates for the deceased seafarers once the ongoing investigation wraps up.
Coordinated Support Efforts
In light of these events, Romania has pledged to coordinate closely with its border police and other relevant authorities. Their goal is to facilitate transit documentation for Filipino workers needing to board or disembark vessels linked to these recent maritime incidents.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac expressed gratitude toward the Romanian government for its compassionate support during this troubling time. This isn’t just a one-time effort; both nations look forward to deepening cooperation in areas such as disaster management, emergency preparedness, and humanitarian response, emphasizing a shared commitment to helping those in need.
Solidarity Through Action
Cacdac and Arafat recently met in Bucharest to discuss these matters further. Philippine officials, including representatives from the DMW, also visited the crew members of the MV Christina B, ensuring that arrangements are being made for the MV Ventura, which is transporting the remains of the affected Filipino seafarers back home.
The DMW, through the Office of Migrant Workers in Bucharest, alongside the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Philippine Embassy in Romania, is dedicated to working with Romanian authorities, licensed manning agencies, shipowners, and the families of the affected seafarers. Their objective remains clear: to provide comprehensive assistance in welfare, psychosocial support, documentation, and repatriation.
