Peso Drops but Remains at P60:$1 Mark!

Peso Dips Amid Economic Concerns: A Closer Look

On Thursday, the Philippine peso faced a slight decline against the US dollar, a shift that many watched closely with bated breath. Despite this dip, the local currency held steady within the P60-to-one dollar range, closing at P60.815 to $1, down from P60.751 the day before.

So, what’s driving this fluctuation? Chief economist Michael Ricafort from Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. weighed in, highlighting that the peso’s weakness comes just a day before the release of new economic growth data for the Philippines. He painted a picture of uncertainty, suggesting that the economic performance might not be as robust as hoped, following a modest growth rate of just 2.8% in the first quarter of 2026.

The anticipation builds as the Philippine Statistics Authority gears up to announce the second quarter and first half GDP figures on August 7, 2026. This release is crucial, especially as fears loom over potential government underspending—particularly in infrastructure projects—that have been hampered since the latter part of 2025 due to ongoing corruption scandals related to flood-control projects.

Adding to the economic mood is the broader context of consumer and investor sentiment, which has taken a hit. The global fuel price hikes, fueled by rising tensions in the Middle East, have further complicated the picture, contributing to inflationary pressures that weigh heavily on the economy.

Yet, not all hope is lost. Ricafort noted that, despite its recent struggles, the peso-dollar exchange rate has shown signs of stability. After facing resistance in higher ranges of 61.60 to 61.80, there have been interventions aimed at smoothing out volatility.

In a world where economies fluctuate and uncertainties abound, the journey of the peso is a testament to the resilience and complexities of financial landscapes. As we await the forthcoming growth data, the hearts of many Filipinos beat with hope for a brighter economic horizon.
