VATICAN CITY – Many Filipino Catholics have started gathering in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican to pray for Pope Francis, who passed away on the morning of Easter Monday at the age of 88.
According to a report by Pia Gonzales-Abucay on Saksi, people from different countries—including Filipinos—have been coming to the big open area in front of the Vatican church to say prayers and remember the pope.
The Bells Rang for Pope Francis
Earlier that day, people in Vatican City heard the church bells ring for almost 15 minutes, starting at noon. This was a special way to tell everyone that something very important had happened—the pope had passed away.
Filipinos Remember the Pope
Many Filipinos in Rome said they were very sad about Pope Francis’ passing. They remembered how much he loved the Philippines and its people. Some even shared memories of when he visited the country and how kind and humble he always was.
“He had a big heart for Filipinos,” one of them said.
Churches Across Italy Also Praying
All over Italy, churches are now including special prayers for Pope Francis during their masses. Some of these churches even have Tagalog masses, so Filipinos living there can hear the prayers in their own language.
When Can People See the Pope?
People will be able to see Pope Francis one last time during a public viewing that’s expected to start on Wednesday, April 23. This is when anyone can go and quietly say goodbye, offer a prayer, or just stand in respect.
But as of now, the Vatican hasn’t shared the exact details of the funeral plans yet.
