PH Ends Online Voting in US—Did OFWs Make Their Voices Heard?

The Philippine Embassy in Washington, D.C. just finished something very important and exciting — they completed online voting for Filipinos living in the United States and nearby places!

🗳️ For 30 days, over 9,000 Filipinos in 8 different embassy offices across the U.S. were given the chance to vote online for the first time ever. And guess what? It was a big success!

Why Is This a Big Deal?

In the past, Filipinos living abroad had to go to the embassy in person or mail their votes using the post office. That could take a long time, and some people couldn’t vote at all because they lived too far away or had trouble sending their ballots.

But this year, for the 2025 elections, they tried something new — online voting! That means voters could use a computer or phone to vote safely and securely. Cool, right? 😄

What Did the Ambassador Say?

Ambassador Jose Manuel Romualdez, the top Filipino official in the U.S., said this is a historic step. He called it a “milestone” — that means a big achievement!

“Online voting helps our kababayan (fellow Filipinos) vote more easily, even if they’re far away. No more postal delays or long travel,” he said.

He also thanked all the Filipinos who participated and said it was just the beginning of a new way to help Filipinos abroad have their voices heard.

How Many People Voted?

Even though more than 188,000 Filipinos were registered across the different posts — from Guam to Washington D.C. — only 9,806 actually voted online. That’s about 5.2% of all the voters.

Here’s a quick look:

  • Total registered voters: 188,519

  • Total who voted online: 9,806

  • Votes counted by the Philippine Embassy in Washington: 2,016

Romualdez explained that midterm elections usually get less attention than presidential ones, so fewer people vote. But he believes this online voting is a great start and hopes more people will join in the future.

Was It Safe and Fair?

Yes! To make sure the vote counting was honest and transparent, special teams called the Special Boards of Election Inspectors (SBEIs) and the Special Board of Canvassers (SBOC) counted and checked all the digital votes. They were watched by election observers to make sure everything was fair and clear.
