THE Philippines logged 10,775 new cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) on Wednesday, breaching the 10,000-mark and making it the highest since Oct. 9, 2021, when the Department of Health (DoH) reported 11,010 cases in a day.
Wednesday’s figure surpassed the 5,434 that was reported on Tuesday.
Of the new cases, 10,688 or 99 percent were tallied from Dec. 23, 2021 to Jan. 5, 2021, with Metro Manila topping the list with 7,420.
The positivity rate is at 31.7 percent where 14,152 of the 44,643 samples that were tested returned positive, the DoH said. All laboratories were operational on Monday, but nine laboratories were not able to submit their data to the Health Department.
Of the 39,974 active cases, 88 percent, or 35,160, are mild or asymptomatic, 2,983 are moderate, 1,512 are severe and 319 are critical.
About 2.780 million or 96.8 percent of the 2.872 million infected individuals have recovered while 51.662 have died, including 58 new fatalities.
Occupancy rate of hospital beds for Covid-19 patients increased in Metro Manila, with 37 percent in intensive care units, 39 percent in isolation, and 45 percent in wards.
