Expanding Horizons: NFA’s Commitment to Local Farmers in Tarlac
On Wednesday, the National Food Authority (NFA) made an exciting announcement that is bound to uplift the spirits of local rice farmers. They are expanding their warehouse capacity in Tarlac, paving the way for more palay (unhusked rice) procurement directly from our hardworking farmers.
Here’s what’s happening: The NFA is leasing a substantial 1,782 square meters of warehouse space from SL Agritech Corp. located in Barangay Masalasa, Victoria. This new facility will enable the storage of approximately 100,000 bags of palay, marking a significant milestone for the agency. Come October 1, this space is set to become a bustling hub for supporting local agriculture.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Every additional warehouse space gives us more room to buy palay from our farmers at reasonable prices. We want the NFA to have the capacity to absorb more of the harvest while ensuring that farmers have a ready market for their produce.” His words resonate deeply, highlighting the mission to uplift local farmers and ensure they receive fair prices for their hard work.
Victoria, known as Tarlac’s second-largest rice-producing municipality, produced an impressive 45,642.85 metric tons (MT) of palay in the recent 2026 season alone. The potential impact of the NFA’s expansion is monumental. With this added warehouse capacity and the space they’ve reclaimed by clearing older stocks, NFA Administrator Larry Lacson hopes to purchase as much as 500,000 metric tons of palay.
The NFA has been working diligently, selling older rice stocks and distributing inventory through various government programs. In February, the agency auctioned almost 90% of the rice stocks available, generating a remarkable P936.5 million, which has opened doors for fresh palay procurement.
This new lease is not just about storage—it’s about building a future. The NFA estimates that around 874 farmers from Victoria and nearby municipalities will benefit from this initiative. It’s a powerful reminder of the vital connection between our agricultural community and food security.
This is a story of growth, opportunity, and a commitment to our farmers. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter, more sustainable future. Stay tuned for more updates and developments in the Philippines and beyond!
