Some leaders say mean things about women and people in the LGBTQ community. That’s not okay! So now, there’s a new idea in the government called House Bill 11498. This bill wants to stop people from becoming leaders if they say rude or sexist things while trying to get votes.
A person in the government named Congresswoman Arlene Brosas made this bill. She said it’s not right for people who want to be leaders to make fun of women or treat them badly. She also said that leaders should be kind, fair, and respectful — not mean or insulting.
She said, “We need to protect women and people who are part of the LGBTQ community. If someone wants to be a leader, they should respect everyone.”
Why is this bill important? Some people who want to be leaders in the 2025 elections were caught saying really disrespectful things.
One example is a man named Christian Sia. He’s trying to become a congressman in Pasig, and he made a bad joke about single moms. He also said something wrong about his woman staff. Some people didn’t like his jokes and got really upset. He said, “It was just a joke,” but people are saying serious things should never be joked about.
Another example is Governor Peter Unabia from Misamis Oriental. He said that nursing scholarships should only go to “beautiful women.” That made many people angry because it was very unfair.
Because of all this, the new bill says:
➡️ People who say mean things about women should not be allowed to run for office.
➡️ These actions are not funny. They are hurtful and disrespectful.
➡️ Everyone — no matter if they are a man, woman, or LGBTQ — deserves respect.
Another leader named Sarah Elago says this rule should be one of the most important ones in the next Congress. She wants to stand up for all the women who were told to be quiet or were disrespected.
She said, “To all the women who were insulted — we are with you! Let’s stop abuse and make sure rude candidates are held responsible.”
So now, people are watching closely to see if this bill will become a real rule. If it does, it could help make Philippine politics kinder and more fair.
