Mindanao Grid Safe After 5.0 Quake in Davao Occidental

No Damage, Just a Shaking Reminder: Earthquake in Mindanao

On a Saturday morning, at exactly 4:07 AM, a magnitude 5 earthquake shook the waters offshore of Sarangani in Davao Occidental. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) quickly reassured us that everything is okay. Their assessment? The Mindanao power grid remained intact.

Imagine waking up to the earth rumbling beneath you—a moment of panic, but then you hear the news: “Power transmission services in Southwestern Mindanao are stable.” That’s a sigh of relief for many.

The tremor, originating 16 kilometers southwest of Balut Island, was felt but didn’t cause any reported damage. This earthquake, a tectonic event, struck at a depth of 10 kilometers and had its epicenter at 05.27°N, 125.40°E, just 16 kilometers south-southwest of Balut Island.

PHIVOLCS, the agency monitoring seismic activities, noted that this earthquake was actually an aftershock of a previous one that rattled the region on June 8. Fortunately, they assured us that no further damage or aftershocks are expected following this recent event.

In a world where natural disasters can strike unexpectedly, the resilience of communities and infrastructure shines through. In the face of moments that rattle our sense of safety, it’s comforting to know that in Southwestern Mindanao, power remains steady and the grid remains strong.

Stay safe, and let’s hope tranquility continues in the beautiful regions of Mindanao.
