Meralco Rates Rise This October—What to Expect!

Brace for Higher Electricity Bills: What You Need to Know

As the month of October unfolds, households across the Philippines are in for a surprise—a higher electricity bill. The Manila Electric Company, or Meralco, recently made the announcement, and it’s one that many of us won’t take lightly.

Starting this month, electricity prices will climb by 31.91 centavos per kilowatt-hour (kWh). What does that mean for the average family? The overall rate for a typical household will rise from P14.7424 per kWh in September to P15.0615 this month. For families consuming around 200 kWh, this translates to an increase of about P62 on your total electricity bill.

So, what’s behind this rise? Meralco has pointed to higher generation charges—up by 49.73 centavos per kWh. Specifically, charges from First Gas shot up by P3.2206 per kWh, largely due to heightened fuel costs. Meanwhile, the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM) saw an increase of P3.5167 per kWh, driven by tighter supply conditions in the Luzon grid and necessary bill adjustments.

On a slightly brighter note, there’s been a decline in charges from power supply agreements (PSAs), dropping by P0.7567 per kWh. This was partially due to the utilization of Malampaya natural gas, which helped ease the burden of the Philippine peso’s depreciation. Additionally, there was a small reduction from the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), along with a net decrease of 3.398 centavos per kWh in taxes and other charges.

But the news doesn’t end there. Recently, the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) made two important announcements related to Meralco rates moving forward. One involves a regulatory rate reset that could potentially push rates higher. The other? A hefty P2.64-billion refund to customers. However, Meralco has clarified that they haven’t yet received the details on these decisions, making it difficult to determine exactly how they will affect end users.

“We still need to see the details of the actual decision of the ERC. Right now, we’re all relying on press releases,” said Meralco vice president Lawrence Fernandez in a virtual briefing. He emphasized that understanding the actual impact on consumers requires careful examination of the ERC’s decisions.

As we gear up for this increase, it becomes even more crucial for families to manage their energy consumption wisely. Every small effort counts, and being informed is the first step in navigating these changes.

So, let’s prepare ourselves, stay informed, and make the most of the resources we have. Together, we can weather this storm.
