Fil-Am Designer Triumphs Over Adversity to Build Brand

The Journey of Romel “RC” Caylan: A Resilient Heart in Fashion

Life isn’t always about winning. For Romel “RC” Caylan, a Filipino-American fashion designer, this truth hits home more than ever. In an industry that can be as unforgiving as it is glamorous, Caylan embodies the essence of vision, inspiration, and sheer determination. Getting his fashion brand off the ground wasn’t just a challenge—it was a monumental journey.

“It’s not always… a winning moment. It’s not,” Caylan shared during an interview with Sparks of Joy, coinciding with Filipino American History Month this October. “There are many hardships. Many obstacles.” The biggest hurdle? Building a brand that carries his name and reputation. “As a designer, you’re not only responsible for the art. You’re also creating a business,” he explained. The weight of that responsibility is immense, and it’s one that Caylan embraces each day.

Nine years ago, he opened a small studio in downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan. From the very beginning, he understood that standing out wasn’t just about having a great design—it was about creating a lasting brand identity. “How do you compete with others when you’re building a namesake brand?” he pondered. Caylan realized that being a great designer was just a piece of the puzzle.

He delved deeper, asking himself not only about design but also about his impact on the community and his clients. “What do I really contribute?” A designer’s role goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about connecting with people. “Hearing feedback from clients is incredibly rewarding. Their satisfaction is the true reward for my hard work,” Caylan said, with passion in his voice.

As he crafted his unique style, three fashion icons guided him: Alexander McQueen, Hubert de Givenchy, and Christian Dior. “These are the giants of the industry,” he acknowledged, his eyes lighting up. Dior, in particular, resonates with him deeply. “When I learned about his story at my age, it lit a fire within me. I felt like I was channeling a new Christian Dior,” Caylan reflected.

His design philosophy? A love for women’s wear and a fascination with textures and classic silhouettes. “It’s like I was reborn in this craft,” he said, filled with pride and joy.

But Caylan’s inspiration doesn’t stop at fashion icons. His family—especially his husband, mother, and grandmother—are his steadfast supporters. Their unwavering belief in him has been a vital source of strength throughout his journey.

His dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. Recently honored as the “Designer and Couturier of the Year” at the Platinum Global Awards 2026, Caylan feels a rush of validation. “It’s a testament that I belong in this industry, even when it feels insurmountably challenging,” he explained, his voice brimming with gratitude.

For RC Caylan, the joy of creating isn’t just about personal achievement; it’s about making his clients feel beautiful and celebrated. “Every smile I see reminds me why I do this. It’s a lifetime achievement, this connection,” he said, filling the room with emotion.

In a world of challenges, Caylan continues to rise, crafting not only garments but a legacy of resilience and passion—one stitch at a time.
