Rising Fare Woes: The LTFRB Weighs New Proposals Amid Fuel Price Surge

Department of Transportation Secretary Giovanni “Banoy” Lopez expressed the urgency of the situation. He instructed the LTFRB to thoroughly evaluate the proposal for a fare hike, signaling that careful consideration is needed before making any decisions. “We need to look at all the factors,” he insisted, emphasizing that the experiences of everyday commuters must be a top priority.
“But here’s the thing,” he continued with palpable concern. “If we feel that the government’s support for our transport groups isn’t enough, we will explore what can be done to address fares.” Lopez is acutely aware of how sensitive this issue can be. He reminded reporters that the President has directed the government to shoulder this burden as much as possible. “We can’t just pass this problem on to our commuters,” he stated firmly. “It’s on us, the government and the Department of Transportation, to step in.”
These words resonate deeply, especially considering the recent surge in local fuel prices. Just this past Tuesday, drivers were hit with a significant impact—gasoline prices climbed by at least P5.00 per liter, diesel by P4.00, and kerosene by P4.60. By September 8, the cumulative rise had reached staggering figures: a net increase of P59.32 per liter for gasoline and over P60 for diesel.
This financial strain is palpable for many. For instance, the transport group Manibela recently conducted a two-day nationwide protest, citing the harsh reality that soaring fuel costs are eating away at drivers’ earnings. With many forced to allocate a considerable portion of their daily income to fuel, they are calling for concrete measures to alleviate their burdens.
