In Argentina, Pope Francisā home country, churches are packed with worshippers offering prayers of hope. Father Adrian Bennardins described Francis as a leader who made the Church ācloser, simpler, and more welcoming to all.ā
In Mexico City, worshippers at the Basilica of Guadalupe felt a special bond with Pope Francis. āSince heās Latino, he understands us, speaks our language, and shares our culture,ā said Grisel Jimenez, a devoted Catholic.

As the worldās largest Catholic country, Brazil is also lifting prayers for Pope Francis.

Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, started his journey as a Jesuit priest in Argentina, later becoming Archbishop of Buenos Aires and a Cardinal before being elected Pope in 2013.
