On Sunday, the Israeli military destroyed several buildings in the Jenin refugee camp, located in the West Bank. The explosions were massive and, according to the Palestinian news agency, around 20 buildings were completely leveled. Thick smoke filled the air as Israeli forces have been carrying out a big operation in Jenin for almost two weeks. The Israeli military claims the operation is aimed at targeting local militants and seizing weapons.
When asked about the explosions, a spokesperson for the Israeli military explained that they had destroyed buildings used by terrorists to hide weapons and carry out attacks. They promised to share more details later.
During the explosions, part of the Jenin Government Hospital was damaged, but thankfully, no one was reported injured. Jenin is home to many Palestinians whose ancestors were forced to leave their homes in 1948 when Israel became a country. The refugee camp has been known as a place where militants operate, and Israel has raided it many times before.
This military operation, which started on January 21, is being carried out with help from helicopters and armored bulldozers. It came just after Israel agreed to a ceasefire with the Hamas group in Gaza. Hamas, a militant group, called for more attacks against Israel after the demolitions in Jenin.
The Palestinian Authority, which is in charge of part of the West Bank, has very limited control over the area, while Israel oversees most military actions. Israeli forces have been battling militants in Jenin since the operation started. Israel’s Defense Minister said the military would remain in the area until the mission is finished, though no timeline has been given.
Since the operation began, at least 25 Palestinians have died, including members of armed groups, a 73-year-old man, and a 2-year-old girl. Israel says it has killed at least 35 militants and arrested more than 100 people. In addition to the demolitions, many homes and roads have been destroyed. On Sunday, a 27-year-old man was killed by Israeli forces during a raid near the refugee camp in Hebron.
