Hope on the Horizon: The Return of Three Ilonggo Seafarers
In a bittersweet twist of fate, three brave Ilonggo seafarers—hailing from the vibrant city of Iloilo and the serene towns of Dingle and Miag-ao—are inching closer to finding their way home. Their vessel, tragically caught in an airstrike over the Black Sea, has left their families anxious and waiting for their safe return.
On July 28, 2026, the Public Employment Service Office (PESO) of Iloilo took a decisive step. Eleven Filipino seafarers embarked on a journey to Romania, ready to replace those who were directly affected by this harrowing event. Among them are our three heroes from Iloilo, whose families have been tirelessly advocating for their safe repatriation.
Cynthia Dario, the head of PESO Iloilo, shared the emotional struggles faced by these families. “The first request was simple: expedite their return. And with this new development, hope is finally in sight,” she expressed, her voice filled with empathy. “When they arrive in Iloilo, we plan to welcome them at the airport and, most importantly, validate their experiences.”
The provincial government is also stepping up to provide much-needed support. They are prepared to offer both psychological and financial assistance to these distressed seafarers. This is a much-needed lifeline for those who have faced unimaginable challenges at sea.
In Iloilo City, the spirit of community shines bright. Gab Umadhay, the head of PESO in Iloilo City, reassured that they are on standby to assist. “We’re ready to help as soon as we hear from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and OWWA,” he said, emphasizing the constant communication they have maintained to support these heroes.
Earlier, many other Filipino seafarers caught in the chaos of the Black Sea managed to return home safely. The Department of Migrant Workers reported that nine ships, carrying a total of 139 Filipino seafarers, faced drone strikes while navigating through the perilous waters of Ukraine and Russia. Each of these stories serves as a stark reminder of the dangers lurking at sea.
As the families of our three Ilonggo seafarers wait with bated breath, there is a flicker of hope on the horizon. The journey home is getting closer, and the love and support surrounding these brave souls are stronger than ever.
