Former Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan, who wants to return to the Senate in the 2025 elections, said on Friday that trying to remove Vice President Sara Duterte from office is a bad idea and a waste of time.
Honasan spoke at a forum in San Juan City, where he made it clear that he agrees with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s opinion that the impeachment effort is unnecessary.
“I agree with the President. This might be a waste of time, not just money. Aren’t there bigger problems to solve? We should focus on the real issues, like making sure people have enough food, clothing, shelter, and education,” Honasan said.
He also questioned whether this impeachment process would bring the country together. “I don’t think so. Especially now that the May elections are coming up, we should be listening to the candidates’ plans and programs instead. Do we really have time for this? Do we have the resources to waste?” he added.
Honasan was part of the Marcos-Duterte “UniTeam” during the 2022 national and local elections.
No Need for Another People Power
As a former military officer, Honasan was once involved in failed uprisings against the government of former President Corazon Aquino. However, this time, he dismissed the idea of another People Power movement.
He warned that the Philippines is becoming unstable and that if things get worse, investors might lose confidence in the country.
“We don’t need to reach that point. While we still have time, let’s unite. We need strong leadership and should focus on solving real problems, not political fights,” he said.
Honasan is running under the Reform PH People’s Party in the 2025 elections.
