Filipinos in France: A Call for Calm Amid Protests
PRAGUE, Czech Republic – In light of escalating tensions and planned protests, the Philippine Embassy in France has issued a heartfelt plea to all Filipinos residing in the country. The message is clear: stay safe and stay calm.
As French authorities prepare to deploy around 70,000 police officers for the anticipated demonstrations this Saturday, the embassy urges the Filipino community to steer clear of areas where protests are set to take place. “Please prioritize your safety,” the advisory emphasizes. It warns against approaching protest sites, large crowds, or areas where violence may erupt. Curiosity may tempt you, but stepping away is the wisest choice if tensions rise.
The embassy also advises against engaging in local political matters, reminding everyone to remain apolitical. It’s important to stay cautious, especially on social media, where discussions can quickly escalate. “We do not take sides in France’s political debates. Our focus is on your safety and mutual respect,” the advisory states, reflecting the embassy’s deep concern for its citizens abroad.
A Serious Situation
The French Interior Minister, Laurent Nuñez, expressed the government’s firm stance as he spoke with reporters. “We will be uncompromising with rioters and looters,” he declared, reinforcing the seriousness of tomorrow’s events. Security measures will include water cannons, armored vehicles, mounted police, helicopters, and even drones. The gravity of the situation becomes clear when he remarks, “We are not talking about a nice, friendly demonstration.”
Last weekend’s protests turned unexpected and chaotic, with rioters exploiting the initial peaceful demonstrations against the rising costs of living and fuel. Cities like Paris, Marseille, and Lyon saw unprecedented street violence and looting. The city hall of Limoges was set ablaze, and these events led to approximately 2,700 arrests since the unrest began.
Preparedness and Vigilance
In preparation for Saturday, authorities have noticed numerous calls from radical groups inciting violence and asking activists to target public buildings. “We are ready for tomorrow. We will be extremely vigilant and firm,” Nuñez assured the public, making it clear that they are not taking any chances.
As a precaution, Paris’s cultural landmarks, including the renowned Louvre, will be closed on Saturday. The atmosphere is tense, and the city braces for what may come.
Beyond France: Protests in Italy
But it’s not just France facing these turbulent times. Over in Italy, another wave of demonstrations is brewing. Featured prominently is the “Movimento 17 ottobre,” a group calling for ongoing protests against the government. The Philippine Embassy in Rome is similarly urging Filipinos to “exercise heightened caution” as crowds are expected to gather in major cities, including Rome, Milan, and Florence.
Secretary Hans Cacdac of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) emphasizes their commitment to the welfare of Filipinos in both France and Italy. “We’ve opened communication lines for those who need assistance. Your safety is our utmost priority,” he said, echoing the embassy’s resolve.
A Time for Unity
In these uncertain times, the message is clear: listen to the advice of the embassy, focus on your safety, and prioritize your well-being. The beauty of community lies in looking out for one another. So, stay informed, stay cautious, and remember: your safety is paramount.
