Filipino-Italians Ignite PH Independence Day 2026 in Rome!

A Vibrant Celebration of Unity and Pride: Philippine Independence Day in Rome

ROME, Italy — This past weekend, the heart of Rome pulsed with life as the Filipino community came together to celebrate the 128th anniversary of Philippine Independence. Beyond a mere historical commemoration, June 14th blossomed into a jubilant showcase of talent, achievement, and pride among the youth born and raised in Italy.

Organized by the Philippine Independence Day Association (PIDA), the event drew roughly 7,000 Filipinos, making it one of the largest gatherings of the Filipino community in Italy. Families and friends filled the Sala Olimpia at the Ergife Palace Hotel, transforming it into a vibrant celebration of cultural heritage.

Pinoy Pride in Sports

Among the standout moments was the recognition of talented Italian-Filipino athletes who brought honor to the Philippines at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games. Athletes like Arriane Angela Paz, who earned a bronze in windsurfing, and Jasmine Althea Ramilo, who snagged gold and bronze in rhythmic gymnastics, stood proudly as role models.

Brothers Kyle and Clayton Lanting, both active players in Lazio Hockey, beamed with pride while sharing their experiences. “I am very proud to be Filipino,” Kyle said with bright eyes. His brother Clayton encouraged fellow youngsters to “Try everything.” The energy was contagious—a perfect embodiment of the Filipino spirit that echoes resilience both in sports and life.

“This is my first time celebrating Philippine Independence Day with all of you, and it fills my heart,” shared Agostino Teofilo Alfieri, the captain of the Hockey 5s team. “Always keep fighting for your dreams. Don’t ever give up,” he urged, a testament to the unwavering spirit of Filipino youth.

Honoring Academic Excellence

The evening also spotlighted the academic achievements of over twenty young Filipinos who recently graduated from university and doctoral programs. As parents looked on, their hearts swelled with pride. Many had sacrificed years of hard work, juggling multiple jobs to support their children’s education.

“Seeing our children recognized in front of thousands of Filipinos is an immense source of pride,” declared a parent, reflecting a sentiment that resonated throughout the crowd. This touching moment underscored the importance of education as a pathway to a brighter future.

A Cultural Showcase

The celebration burst to life with a dazzling cultural show, where young Filipino-Italians expressed their identity through dance, music, and spirited performances. Traditional pieces like the Singkil by Pinoy Teens Salinlahi and modern interpretations of Tinikling showcased the rich tapestry of Filipino heritage.

Gabriel Angelo Montalva, a young star from “The Voice Kids Italy,” captivated the crowd, and violinists Stefano Mori and John Gabriel Chavez stirred emotions with their rendition of “Bayan Ko.” “Being surrounded by fellow Filipinos and their culture feels like home,” shared a group of young attendees, echoing the warmth of collective pride.

Creative Ingenuity on Display

Demonstrating creativity and sustainability, the youth also participated in a fashion show featuring costumes made from recycled materials—old fabrics, cardboard, and more—masterfully crafted by their talented mothers. “We wanted to show that our beauty and talent come from our hearts,” a participant remarked, revealing the thoughtfulness behind their creations.

One costume, inspired by the Philippine eagle, symbolized the courage and strength of the Filipino spirit. The designs not only celebrated Filipino culture but also spoke volumes about resilience and resourcefulness—qualities inherent in the lives of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs).

A Connection to the Future

The event served a dual purpose: a lively tribute to independence and a stark reminder of the vital role that second-generation Filipinos play in preserving their heritage. Their enthusiasm and artistry ensured that the legacy of their parents would continue to thrive.

Ambassador Neal Imperial and other officials from the Philippine Embassy joined the festivities, adding a sense of unity and pride to the day. As the night wore on, the spirit of celebration reached new heights with a grand raffle draw, featuring exciting prizes that kept the energy alive.

A Message of Gratitude

Local Italian officials, including Sabrina Giusepetti, offered heartfelt praise for the Filipino community’s contributions to Rome. Expressions of thanks for their service and integration filled the air, showcasing the beautiful blend of cultures.

As the event concluded, PIDA President Auggie Cruz expressed gratitude to everyone involved—the performers, sponsors, and volunteers whose collective efforts transformed the celebration into an unforgettable experience.

In that moment, a part of Rome erupted into a colorful extension of the Philippines. It was not just a day of marking independence but a powerful reminder of a new generation of Filipino-Italians, proudly carrying their culture and identity into the future. United in pride, they reminded everyone present that their spirit, creativity, and love for their homeland would continue to shine brightly, wherever they may roam.
