Filipina Seafarer Breaks Gender Barriers and Stereotypes!

Navigating New Horizons: The Inspiring Journey of KC Abigail Chin-Sood

KC Abigail Chin-Sood is not your average seafarer. At first glance, her journey seems like a series of unexpected turns — from aspiring lawyer to pilot, to navigating the vast oceans as a second officer. Yet, every wave she faced brought her closer to fulfilling her own unique destiny.

A Dream Deferred

Growing up in the Philippines, Abigail’s dreams soared high. She pictured herself either standing in a courtroom, passionately advocating for justice, or piloting a plane through the clouds. But life isn’t always a straight path. Driven by her family’s financial struggles, Abigail realized that her dreams would need to be adjusted.

“I remember wanting to be a lawyer or a pilot,” she reflected in a heartfelt interview. “But because we were on a tight budget, I told my parents I would pursue marine transportation instead, inspired by my father, who was also a seafarer.”

Anchored in Determination

With a heart full of determination, Abigail embarked on her journey into the maritime world, armed with nothing but her ambition and a resolve to make a difference. After nearly 11 years at sea, she currently serves on tanker ships that transport crude oil across the globe. Her voyages take her from Europe to Africa, touching upon distant shores that most only dream of.

Yet, getting her foot in the door wasn’t a smooth sail. Upon graduating college, she moved to Manila, faced with uncertainty about whether a shipping company would ever hire her. “It was incredibly difficult to find a job, especially as a woman. There were few companies willing to accept female applicants” she recalled.

A Fight for Respect

In a predominantly male industry, Abigail fought tooth and nail to prove her worth. Each challenge reinforced her belief that her presence wasn’t a liability, but an asset. “As a woman, I had to continuously prove myself,” she shared. Yet, she found strength in her uniqueness. “Women bring a special perspective, and our ability to communicate and collaborate is one of our greatest strengths.”

Battling the Storms of Separation

The life of a seafarer isn’t just about navigating the high seas; it’s also about the emotional storms that come with long separations from loved ones. “Being away from my family can be incredibly challenging, not just for me but for them as well,” Abigail admitted. Today, as a married woman, the emotional waves wash over her even more strongly. “My husband feels the weight of my absences too.”

Her job is rife with risks, as she sails through high-risk areas where uncertainty looms. “Every day brings its own challenges, from harsh weather to the worry of safely returning home.”

The Beauty of Adventure

Yet, amidst the challenges, there are countless rewards. “Every day is a new adventure,” she beams. “I get to explore different parts of the world, and each port brings fresh experiences.” For Abigail, the thrill of exploration keeps her spirit alive.

Her mission goes beyond personal fulfillment; she’s determined to break barriers for other women aspiring to venture into the maritime field. With her growing social media presence, she shares stories of life at sea, shining a light on the contributions of women in a predominantly male industry.

A Pinay at Sea

Though she sails thousands of kilometers away from home, Abigail carries the essence of her Filipino heritage with pride. “As a Pinay at sea, I bring with me the values of bayanihan and malasakit. These are the virtues of community and compassion that help me connect with others, showcasing the warmth of Filipino culture.”

Abigail understands the impact of her work, contributing to global trade and making a difference in the industry. “I’m proud to be a part of something essential,” she stated emphatically.

A Message to Future Generations

To the next wave of aspiring female seafarers, Abigail has a powerful message: “You can break barriers. Prove that we can excel in any field. Don’t let anyone limit your dreams. Your strength is limitless.”

With her heart set on inspiring others, KC Abigail Chin-Sood is not just charting her course across the ocean; she’s guiding others on their journeys as well.
