Fil-Am Lawyer Ferdinand Suba: A Family Legacy in Law

A Legacy of Justice: The Inspiring Journey of Atty. Ferdinand G. Suba, Esq.

For Atty. Ferdinand G. Suba, or “Dean” as friends and colleagues affectionately call him, the legal profession is more than just a career—it’s a deep-rooted passion that began in his hometown of Santa Ana, Pampanga.

Early Inspirations

From a young age, Dean was surrounded by politics, public service, and the law. He watched with wide eyes as his father, Felix Suba, campaigned for mayor. “I would sit beside him, fascinated,” Dean recalls. “I even helped him type legal documents on an old Underwood typewriter!” The thrill of watching his father navigate the complexities of law sparked a curiosity that would evolve into a full-blown love for the legal profession.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from the University of Santo Tomas, he took another big leap—enrolling at the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law. By 1985, he achieved a significant milestone, passing the Philippine Bar.

A New Beginning in America

In 1989, Dean took a brave step, moving to the United States to carve out a new path. He faced the daunting task of familiarizing himself with a new legal system. It wasn’t long before he was admitted to the New York State Bar and began practicing law. His significant journey led him from a litigation associate position at a Wall Street firm to establishing his own law practice, where he continues to thrive.

For over three decades, Dean has devoted his career to helping clients navigate the often-overwhelming world of immigration law, representing individuals from over 50 countries. His pursuit of knowledge didn’t stop there; he furthered his education with postgraduate studies in Elder Law, Wills, and Trusts at New York University. He maintains affiliations with prestigious organizations, including the American Immigration Lawyers Association and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.

A Legacy of Values

While forging a successful legal career, Dean unknowingly inspired the next generation—his son, Ferdinand Jr. A childhood filled with stories of his grandfather’s battles against injustice left a lasting impression. “I was proud to see my father challenge graft and corruption on television,” Dean shared, instilling values of integrity and justice in his son.

Young Ferdinand often accompanied his father to the office, observing the struggles and triumphs of the legal profession. Dean nurtured essential skills in him, emphasizing the importance of writing and public speaking—the core tools of a successful lawyer. Ferdinand Jr. would later graduate from Cornell Law School and become a litigation associate at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, following in his father’s inspiring footsteps.

Beyond the Courtroom

Dean’s influence extends well beyond the courtroom. As a community leader and philanthropist, he has tirelessly served Filipino-Americans. His pro bono efforts have left a significant mark, providing legal services to various nonprofit organizations across New York. He has acted as legal counsel for several Filipino American institutions, and his outstanding contributions have earned him numerous awards, including the Outstanding Filipino in America Award in Law.

Driven by a commitment to service, Dean initiated the Filipino Catholic Award and the Dr. Jose P. Rizal Excellence Awards, celebrating achievements in diverse fields like medicine, education, and youth leadership. His passion for sharing knowledge shines through as he has lectured on topics from immigration law to the life of Dr. Jose Rizal, even penning a monthly column for “The Filipino Catholic.”

A Devotion to Rizal’s Ideals

A dedicated Rizalian, Dean holds a prominent position within the international organization Knights of Rizal, where he has earned the esteemed rank of Knight Grand Cross of Rizal. “My life is fueled by Dr. Jose Rizal’s ideals—integrity, education, and service,” he passionately states.

For the Suba family, law is more than a profession; it represents a legacy intertwined with a steadfast commitment to serving others. Guided by the Jesuit motto “For the greater glory of God,” Dean embodies what it means to live a life dedicated to justice, putting others before oneself.

Closing Thoughts

Through triumphs and challenges, Atty. Ferdinand G. Suba’s story is a testament to the power of family, service, and an unwavering dedication to the law. His journey inspires countless others, reminding us all that the pursuit of justice is not just a duty, but a noble calling that transcends generations.
