MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has issued an important travel advisory for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Europe: Follow the new border control measures in the Schengen Area to avoid travel issues.
Which Countries Have Tightened Border Checks?
Recently, the following Schengen countries have reintroduced stricter border controls:
Denmark
Norway
Slovenia
Sweden
These countries have stepped up security measures due to concerns over public safety and internal security.
What OFWs and Travelers Should Do
The DMW reminds all OFWs to be extra careful when crossing borders within the Schengen Zone. Here’s what they should always carry:
Valid Passport
Visa or Residence Permit
Any Other Important Travel Documents
Authorities have increased security measures, including:
More checks on cross-border trains
More police stationed at borders
Surveillance cameras and face recognition technology
Why Are These Border Rules Being Reinforced?
Under the Schengen Borders Code (SBC), European Union (EU) member states can temporarily bring back border checks if there is a serious threat to public order or security.
Border Controls in Non-Schengen Neighboring Countries
Apart from Schengen countries, other European nations bordering Switzerland are also enforcing similar policies:
Austria – October 16, 2024, to April 15, 2025
France – November 1, 2024, to April 30, 2025
Germany – November 12, 2024, to March 15, 2025
Italy – June 19, 2024, to December 18, 2025
What This Means for OFWs in Europe
If you are an OFW in Europe, be sure to:
Stay updated on travel rules and border policies
Carry all necessary documents at all times
Expect longer processing times at borders
Failing to comply with these border rules could lead to delays, travel issues, or even fines, so stay informed and prepared!
