In a heartfelt address this past Saturday, the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) sent a crucial message to our beloved Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs): please steer clear of political rallies in host countries that strictly prohibit such activities.
DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac emphasized the point with compassion and clarity. He reminded us that as Filipino workers, we hold a special place in the hearts of foreign employers. Our dedication, law-abiding nature, and adaptability shine brightly wherever we go.
We’re Here for a Purpose
At the Saturday News Forum, Cacdac expressed something we all feel deep down: “Tayo’y nandun lamang para magtrabaho, paunlarin ang pamilya natin, pamayanan natin, isang bayanan.” (We are only there to work and uplift our families, our citizenry, our nation.) He passionately urged us to remember why we left our homeland. Our mission is clear: to provide for our loved ones and contribute positively to our communities—not to engage in political debates, especially in times of political instability within our host countries.

While Cacdac refrained from naming specific countries, he reassured that many migrant workers are already aware of the places where political involvement can lead to serious consequences. He voiced a firm stance: “Do not participate in rallies or express your political views, especially on social media.” This isn’t just advice—it’s a protective mantra in an uncertain world. Many host nations have strict regulations about foreigners who meddle in local political affairs, and the risks involved are all too real.

In 2025, a situation arose that strikes at the core of this message. Twenty Filipino workers were arrested for holding a political demonstration without a permit, an event meant to commemorate the birthday of former President Rodrigo Duterte. While the group was later released and charges dismissed, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the fine line we walk as expatriates.
