The mine extends deep beneath the earth, with its nine levels and approximately 245 kilometers of underground galleries, plunging down to a depth of 327 meters—almost enough space to fit the Eiffel Tower standing tall! But here’s the catch: only about two percent of this magnificent “salt labyrinth” is open to the public. Visitors are invited to walk along a well-trodden path that spans about 3.5 kilometers and reaches a depth of around 135 meters.

Hidden among the salt formations is a striking sculpture of Nicolaus Copernicus, the esteemed Polish astronomer who changed our understanding of the universe. “We’d like to think he was the first famous tourist to the mine,” Katarzyna smiles, noting how one miner spent over a year crafting this impressive tribute using only a hammer.
As I touch the wall, the salt’s presence is undeniable—it sparkles in the light, and I can even taste it on my fingertips. “Pure salt. Everything is edible!” Katarzyna encourages us, inviting everyone to share in this unique experience.
But nothing could prepare us for the breathtaking St. Kinga’s Chapel, a subterranean sanctuary carved entirely from salt. With altars and sculptures depicting saints and biblical scenes, this grand chamber goes beyond mere ornamentation. It’s a sanctuary where miners found refuge in prayer amid the challenges they faced daily. The shimmering chandeliers made of polished salt crystals glisten above, creating an atmosphere of serene beauty.
In one poignant corner, a statue of St. John Paul II stands tall, honoring the Polish pope who once visited the mine. Captured in the same material that nourished generations of miners, the sculpture immortalizes a connection to both faith and heritage.
