The Commission on Elections (Comelec) has called out six Senate candidates for breaking election rules with their campaign posters. Some were placed illegally, while others were even nailed to trees—causing outrage among the public and environmental advocates.
A viral Facebook post with nearly a million views slammed this practice, highlighting the damage it does to trees. Environmentalist Ronald Posadas explained that hammering nails into trees can introduce bacteria and cause decay.
“Just like humans, trees feel pain too. Imagine someone hammering a nail into your finger—it hurts, right? Trees suffer the same way,” Comelec Chairman George Garcia emphasized.
Comelec has reminded all candidates to follow eco-friendly campaign guidelines and place posters only in designated areas. Those who ignore the rules could face penalties, while the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is also stepping in to address environmental violations.
As election season heats up, voters are urged to choose leaders who respect not just the law, but also the environment.
