Among them is Santiago Lloreda, whose life changed forever when the quake struck. “My daughter was a dream made reality,” he shared, overwhelmed by grief after losing both his mother and 13-month-old daughter, Salma, in the disaster. “My mother was the pillar of our family; she gave everything up to look after the baby. It cost her life, but it made her so proud and happy.”
Another family member, Ricardo, traveled thousands of miles from Miami to collect his sister’s body. “There are heroes helping return our family’s bodies to us as soon as they can,” he said, holding onto hope amidst the tragedy.

This catastrophe poses a significant test for President De La Espriella, whose agenda includes cutting public spending and tightening security. “The earthquake will be the first test for the new Colombian president,” noted Tiziano Breda, a senior analyst in the region.
