Senators Demand Fast Action from Agencies After Mindanao Quake

Urgent Response Needed After Mindanao’s Devastating 7.8 Magnitude Earthquake

This past Monday, a shocking 7.8-magnitude earthquake rocked Mindanao, sending tremors through the hearts of every resident. As reports emerged of damaged homes, disrupted utilities, and the terrifying fear of a tsunami, it became clear that immediate action was necessary. Senators across the nation stepped forward, calling on national agencies to rally together and provide much-needed support to the affected communities.

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian was one of the first to sound the alarm. He emphasized the importance of an “all-hands-on-deck” approach from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, the Department of Social Welfare and Development, and local government units. “This earthquake struck off the coast of Sarangani Province, and initial reports are alarming,” he said. “With buildings damaged and schools impacted just as classes commenced, we must prioritize the safety of our teachers and students.”

The timing of the earthquake couldn’t have been worse. As students began their first day back in classrooms, Senator Gatchalian stressed the need to ensure that school buildings are safe and to offer psychosocial support for everyone affected. “Let’s not forget our learners,” he said. “We need to protect their well-being during such a traumatic time.”

Senator Francis “Kiko” Pangilinan also extended his support, sharing that his office is in constant coordination with disaster response agencies. “We’re pushing for interventions that help students who were traumatized on their first day of school,” he noted. His words carried a promise of hope for those feeling lost and bewildered in the aftermath of disaster.

Adding to the chorus of support, Senator Bong Go called for urgent measures to aid those who’ve lost their livelihoods. “We need immediate interventions for those who have suddenly found themselves without a way to provide for their families,” he stated, drawing on his own roots in Davao City. With many local establishments forced to close, the call for help resonated deeply. Go also addressed the crucial needs for power restoration and road clearing—a reminder that everyday life must strive to return to normal.

In the midst of this crisis, Senator Robin Padilla took a moment to highlight the importance of accurate information. “Every minute counts,” he passionately urged. “We must not let the spread of unverified news add to the panic.” Padilla called on local government units and residents to push out accurate information, reminding everyone to rely on official advisories. “It’s about saving lives; we all have a role to play,” he reminded the public.

As the nation unites in response, these senators extend their prayers and deepest sympathies to the affected families, especially those who have lost loved ones. In these testing times, hope, compassion, and action are our guiding lights. Together, we will rise from this tragedy, stronger and more resilient than before.
