Visayas Grid on Yellow Alert Again: Tuesday, June 16, 2026

Urgent Yellow Alert for the Visayas Grid: A Call for Awareness

On June 16, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., the Visayas region will experience a yellow alert, a signal to everyone about the heightened demand for electricity amid significant shortages. This alert, issued by the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between power supply and demand—one that has recently been put to the test.

The Numbers Speak

As the sun begins to set, the situation grows increasingly tense. The NGCP reports that while available capacity stands at 2,587 megawatts (MW), peak demand could soar to a staggering 2,384 MW. That’s only a small buffer of 203 MW—too thin for comfort. Behind these numbers lies a troubling reality: a total of 36 power plants are either offline or running at less than full strength, leading to a significant loss of nearly 948 MW.

A History of Outages

The concern doesn’t stem from a single day of trouble. As we look back, the figures reveal a distressing trend. Thirteen plants have faced forced outages over the last few years. Some of them have been offline since 2021, while others, like a handful of plants in June 2026, have only recently added to the struggles facing the grid.

Among the culprits are several major coal plants, including Therma Visayas Inc. and Panay Energy Development Corp. Their unavailability is central to the current alert, compounded by an unexpected surge in demand.

What Does This Mean for You?

A yellow alert is more than just a technical term; it’s a signal for everyone living in the Visayas. It indicates that the operating margin is not enough to tackle any sudden issues that may arise within the grid. As the evening approaches, families and businesses alike are encouraged to be mindful of their energy consumption—every little bit helps.

Our Collective Responsibility

In moments like these, it’s crucial for communities to come together. Being aware of our energy usage and making small adjustments can make a significant difference. Remember, every time you turn off an unnecessary light or unplug a device, you contribute to a larger effort that benefits us all.

As we navigate this alert, let’s stay informed and proactive. Together, we can weather the storm and work towards a more reliable power future for the Visayas. Stay safe and energy-conscious!
