As the world welcomed the New Year, tragedy struck in Switzerland.
A deadly fire tore through a resort bar during a New Year’s celebration, killing at least 40 people and injuring around 100 others. The blaze broke out at about 1:30 a.m., turning what should have been a moment of joy into a night of horror.
In the aftermath, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it is still verifying whether any Filipinos were among those affected.
According to DFA spokesperson Angelica Escalona, the Philippine government is taking the situation seriously.
“The Department of Foreign Affairs, through the Philippine Embassy in Berne, is closely monitoring developments and coordinating with Swiss authorities to verify if Filipino nationals are affected,” she said.
Even as the verification continues, the DFA expressed its deep condolences to the Swiss Confederation and to the families of those who lost their lives.
The Philippine Embassy in Berne, Escalona added, is on standby.
“The Embassy stands ready to assist any Filipino national who may be affected in the fire,” she said.
Meanwhile, Swiss authorities are continuing their investigation into the cause of the blaze. Initial findings point to “fountain candle” sparklers as the possible source of the fire, which quickly spread inside the crowded venue.
What began as a celebration ended in grief — a stark reminder of how fragile life can be, even in moments meant for hope and new beginnings.
As investigations move forward, Filipino officials remain vigilant, ready to help, and hoping that no kababayan was caught in the tragedy.
