Building a Brighter Future: The Heart of Brigada Eskwela
As the school year approaches, a powerful spirit of community rises among Filipino youth. This is thanks to the Department of Education (DepEd) leading the way with its flagship event, Brigada Eskwela. This yearly initiative encourages everyone—students, parents, teachers, and local communities—to come together and prepare public schools, making them the best possible learning environments for our children.
The theme for this year’s Brigada Eskwela is “Working Together in Schools: Unity for the Nation’s Orderliness and Knowledge.” This highlights our commitment to improving school infrastructure and strengthening literacy.
The Three Stages of Brigada Eskwela
Pre-Implementation: Assessing the Needs
In preparation for Brigada Eskwela Week, which begins on June 1 and ends on June 5, schools must spend two to three months assessing what needs to be done. School coordinators conduct thorough evaluations of school facilities, identifying those needing repairs or upgrades. This includes:
– Classrooms
– Libraries
– Laboratories
– Water and sanitation facilities
– Electrical systems
– Roofs and drainage systems
– Perimeter fences
These inspections ensure that schools are safe and functional, ready to face any challenges—typhoons, earthquakes, or even fire. Importantly, during this time, no collections or donations should be solicited from parents, students, or volunteers. The DepEd emphasizes that partnerships with industries like tobacco or alcohol are strictly prohibited.
Implementation: Coming Together
Once the week arrives, everyone—teachers, students, parents, and community members—will join forces to dive into hands-on activities. Some exciting options for participation include:
– General cleaning of classrooms and school grounds
– Repairing and repainting facilities
– Organizing reading or storytelling sessions
– Tree planting to promote a greener environment
We must keep our learning spaces clean and free from unnecessary decorations! Together, we can make a significant impact during this week.
Post-Implementation: Reflecting on Success
Brigada Eskwela doesn’t end once the week is over. Schools will prepare accomplishment reports summarizing all activities carried out and partnerships formed. This helps in keeping track of donations and resources contributed during the event—ensuring everything is accounted for.
And in a positive note, participation in Brigada Eskwela is officially recognized, with DepEd employees encouraged to join the activities for at least two days. Teachers can even earn vacation service credits for their time and dedication!
Addressing Concerns
While Brigada Eskwela promotes community togetherness, it has also sparked concerns online. Many worry that it shifts too much responsibility onto parents and teachers for maintaining school facilities. For instance, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) voiced its worries, stating that teachers shouldn’t have to spend their own money to ensure classrooms are well-equipped and comfortable.
A call for action has also emerged from ACT Party-list Representative Antonio Tinio, who urged the DepEd to promptly release the ₱10,000 teaching supplies allowance for teachers, emphasizing that it should be received in full, as it is tax-exempt.
Looking Forward
The full heart of the Brigada Eskwela initiative is about collaboration—uniting our efforts to build schools fit for our future generations. By coming together, we strengthen our communities while ensuring every child has a safe and inspiring environment where they can learn and grow.
Let’s embrace the spirit of bayanihan and work hand in hand for a brighter tomorrow!
