62 Filipinos Back Home from Riyadh, More Arrivals Soon!

Heartfelt Return: A Journey Home for Filipinos from Saudi Arabia

In a powerful display of solidarity and support, 62 more Filipinos have flown home from Saudi Arabia, adding to the 512 who recently made their way back to the Philippines. This repatriation comes amid growing tensions in the Middle East and serves as a reminder of the deep bond shared between the Filipino people and their homeland.

A Challenging Journey

Following a three-week closure of King Khaled International Airport due to a devastating Houthi strike on October 10, flights have finally resumed—albeit with limitations. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has been at the forefront of this repatriation effort, ensuring that those stranded find their way home safely.

DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac expressed the urgency of the situation: “Flights may have resumed, but they’re not back to normal yet. That’s why our assistance is vital for those still stuck in Riyadh,” he shared in a heartfelt social media update. With a reassuring tone, he stated, “We sent home 512 repatriates, and now, another 62 are joining them tonight. I traveled with them on the plane.”

A Ray of Hope

These individuals faced unnecessary delays because of the airport closure, but with every passing day, hope flickered brighter. “It’s been three weeks since flights were operational. The airport reopened just four days ago, but it’s been tough getting things back on track,” he added.

In the coming days, around 500 more Filipinos are scheduled to return home. Cacdac emphasized the government’s commitment to helping those whose flights were canceled, ensuring they find a path back to their loved ones. Financial assistance has also been a crucial lifeline, with nearly 3,900 individuals receiving support since the crisis began, most of whom are airport workers.

“Many of these workers lost their jobs temporarily due to the airport’s closure,” Cacdac explained. “A wide range of roles—from ground crew to flight attendants—were affected, and we are here to support them during this tough time.”

Gratitude and Safety First

Cacdac extended heartfelt gratitude to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for their unwavering support. “We are incredibly thankful to the King and the Royal Crown Prince for their protection,” he said, reflecting on the recent security alerts during his five-day stay in Saudi Arabia. Remarkably, he noted, “Not a single overseas Filipino worker was harmed during those alarms.”

The announcement of the recent repatriation comes on the heels of a tragic event on October 10—a Houthi strike that took the lives of 12 individuals, marking one of the most devastating incidents in the kingdom in over a decade. But amidst this chaos, the resilience of Filipinos shone through, and their homecoming is a testament to the strength of community and support.

As the DMW continues its efforts, Secretary Cacdac reassured everyone: “Our mission is to ensure the safety and welfare of overseas Filipino workers. They are a priority for our government, and our support will keep coming.”

In these challenging times, the return of each Filipino is not just a logistical success; it’s a story of compassion, resilience, and hope. As planes take to the skies, bringing loved ones together, we are reminded of the unbreakable ties that bind us to home.
