A Warm Welcome Home: Returning OFWs Amid Uncertainty
On a poignant Monday, 32 overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) — along with one dependent — arrived back in the Philippines from Kuwait, escaping the shadows of renewed conflict in the Gulf region. The atmosphere was charged with emotion as they landed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 1 on a Kuwait Airways flight, greeted by friendly faces and open arms.
The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) coordinated a heartwarming welcome, where personnel from OWWA and the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) were ready to assist. These returning heroes were not just welcomed with smiles but also with essential support, including food, financial assistance, and transportation. Temporary accommodations were offered, ensuring that these individuals felt the warmth of home as they stepped back onto familiar soil.
OWWA reassured the returnees that their journey didn’t end at the airport. Moving forward, they will have access to reintegration programs aimed at easing their transition back into everyday life. This includes livelihood assistance and training designed to empower them and help rebuild their futures.
Just a couple of days earlier, on Saturday, another group of Filipinos made their way home. Out of 61 OFWs from Kuwait who arrived at NAIA Terminal 1, an overwhelming 60 had come from the Sulaibiya Deportation Center, while one chose to return voluntarily. Each of their stories, filled with struggle, resilience, and hope, converged in that moment of reunion.
Additionally, 18 more OFWs from Russia touched down at NAIA Terminal 3 on an Air China flight, highlighting the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of Filipinos abroad, even amidst challenging circumstances.
The Philippine Embassy in Kuwait has been keenly monitoring the situation, strongly advising Filipinos in the region to remain vigilant. With tensions rising due to renewed attacks involving Iran and the United States, the embassy encouraged everyone to seek information only from official news sources to remain informed and safe.
Over a week ago, U.S. forces executed strikes targeting Iranian military installations, a stark reminder of the unstable backdrop these workers faced during their time overseas. A ceasefire that once fostered hope had collapsed, making the journey home all the more crucial.
As these brave OFWs take their first steps back to the Philippines, their stories are a testament to their resilience. Though their journeys may have been challenging, their spirit remains unbroken. With continued support from organizations like OWWA and DMW, there is hope for a brighter future waiting for them.
