3 Filipinos Hurt in Riyadh Airport Attack Are Recovering

Hope Rising: Filipino Survivors Improving After Airport Attack in Saudi Arabia

In the wake of the tragic attack at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, on October 10, a glimmer of hope shines through the darkness. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has shared encouraging news about the condition of the wounded Filipino nationals, reminding us of the resilience of the human spirit.

According to Labor Attaché Dominador Salanga, three patients who once occupied the intensive care unit (ICU) are showing signs of recovery. Remarkably, one has already been transferred to a regular ward in a burn unit at a government hospital. Even better, another patient currently in the ICU may soon follow suit. These transitions are testaments to strength and healing.

In another heartening update, a third Filipino victim has stabilized considerably. “Only one remains in the ICU,” the DMW reported. “But their condition has shown marked improvement; they are awake and alert, boasting a Glasgow scale score of 15/15.” This clarity signals a hopeful path towards recovery, and it’s expected that, with continued progress, the two patients can also move to a regular ward soon.

The backdrop of this recovery is undeniably solemn. The attack has been labeled one of the deadliest in over a decade, leaving at least 12 individuals dead and over 300 injured. Among the casualties were seven overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), with three in critical condition. The pain of such loss resonates deeply, and our hearts go out to the families affected.

In response to this violence, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and DMW are actively coordinating with Saudi authorities, ensuring that necessary medical care and support are provided to the injured. They stand firm in their commitment to safeguard Filipino nationals and residents—close to one million in the Kingdom—while expressing heartfelt condolences to those mourning the lives taken too soon.

“This is a grave threat to regional peace and stability,” the DFA stated, echoing a call for an end to hostilities. They emphasized the importance of dialogue and diplomacy to pursue a peaceful resolution to this crisis.

As we reflect on these developments, the resilience of those recovering offers hope. It serves as a reminder of our shared humanity, the value of compassion, and the enduring spirit of hope that can rise even in the darkest of times. The journey ahead may still be challenging, but with each small victory in the hospitals of Riyadh, we hold onto the belief that healing is possible.

Let’s continue to support one another during these overwhelming times, sending courage and prayers to all those affected. Together, we can foster the light of hope in the shadows of adversity.
