2 Pinoy Seafarers Dead, 12 Injured in Black Sea Drone Strike

Tragedy at Sea: The Heartbreaking Loss of Filipino Seafarers in the Black Sea

In a devastating turn of events, two Filipino seafarers lost their lives amidst drone attacks in the Black Sea, with 12 others injured, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW). The news hit hard and echoed through communities, as families grappled with the tragic reality of the evolving conflict in southern Ukraine.

During a poignant press conference, Migrant Workers Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac expressed deep sorrow over the loss: ā€œWe are sad to report that there have been two fatalities out of these attacks, 12 injured and one missing. This highlights the increasingly volatile security environment in the Black Sea.ā€ His words, tinged with emotion, reflected the uncertainty and fear many are now facing.

The first heartbreaking news came on July 6, and just as the world began to process that loss, the news of a second seafarer’s death on July 19 shook us to our core. Ukrainian officials revealed that a Russian strike had targeted an international cargo vessel near Odesa, claiming at least five crew members’ lives. The atmosphere was heavy with grief.

Cacdac continued, shedding light on the ongoing crisis. ā€œThe attacks have largely focused on bulk carriers and oil product tankers, with incidents occurring close to ports and anchorages in southern Ukraine.ā€ He emphasized that many of these merciless drone strikes happened while vessels were docked or shortly after departing.

Among the chaos, 139 Filipino seafarers were bravely navigating their duties on nine ships that fell victim to these attacks. Thankfully, 124 of them are safe and unharmed. However, for the injured, the road to recovery has just begun. Four seafarers have already been repatriated, while the remaining eight are still receiving medical care.

In a show of support, Cacdac assured that the DMW is actively coordinating with the families of those affected. The commitment to assist does not end there; the DMW is also looking into the accountability of the manning agencies involved and has warned of possible penalties for any negligence uncovered.

As the families of these seafarers navigate this heartbreaking journey, they are not alone. The community stands ready to support them, emotional ties binding us all as we bear witness to this tragedy at sea.

In moments like these, we are reminded of the fragility of life and the invaluable contributions of those who brave the oceans for their families and nations. Let us honor their courage and keep them in our thoughts as we hope for a safer future.
