A Heartfelt Journey: Filipino Runners Take on the New York City Marathon
New York City—On Sunday, November 1, over 100 Filipino and Filipino American runners will lace up their shoes to take on one of the most iconic races in the world: the New York City Marathon. This year, they’ll join approximately 60,000 runners from every corner of the globe, traversing a challenging 26.2-mile course that winds through the five vibrant boroughs of NYC. With more than two million spectators expected to line the streets, the atmosphere will be nothing short of electric.
Before the big day, the runners gathered at the Philippine Consulate in Manhattan for a warm reception filled with encouragement and camaraderie. Consul Anna Marie Guerra welcomed these athletes, who had traveled from near and far to be part of this extraordinary event. She spoke passionately about the spirit of the marathon, describing how strangers cheer for runners as if they were family, how entire neighborhoods rally together, and how families wait for hours simply to offer their love and support.
“That spirit is something very familiar to us as Filipinos,” Consul Guerra remarked, evoking the essence of *bayanihan*—the harmonious community spirit.
Among those ready to tackle the course this year is the talented fashion designer Bessie Bessana. After nearly four months of rigorous training, he feels both nervous and excited about his second New York City Marathon. Reflecting on what had become his biggest hurdle, he noted, “The hardest part for me is Mile 23, kasi patapos ka na (because you’re about to finish) but then there’s that steep incline on Fifth Avenue!” His eyes sparkled with hope as he shared how this year’s determination has fueled his drive to conquer the challenges ahead.
Then there’s Francis Youn, who flew all the way from Cebu to participate in his very first marathon. After a year of dedicated training, he’s ready to embrace the thrill of the race. “I just really love running,” Francis shared with a smile. “My whole family runs—my dad, my sister. It’s a family thing for us.” It’s clear that his passion runs deep, inspiring him to take this leap into the world of marathons.
As excitement builds, safety is also a priority. The NYPD has launched an extensive security operation to protect both runners and spectators. Thousands of officers will patrol the route, supported by specialized units, helicopters, and drones. With hundreds of blocker vehicles and over 10,000 metal barricades in place, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch assured everyone that, as of now, there are no known specific or credible threats to the event.
As the city gears up for this monumental day, you can feel the energy pulsing through the streets. Each runner represents not just their own journey, but also the robust spirit of friendship, support, and community that brings everyone together. When the gun goes off and they all start moving, they will carry the hopes and cheers of millions, reminding us all that in the race of life, we’re better together.
Let’s cheer for them as they blaze their trails through the streets of New York City—a journey fueled by dreams, resilience, and a shared love for running. 🌟
