Do you know what happens when a high government official is accused of doing something wrong? They go through a special kind of trial called an impeachment trial. Right now, the Vice President of the Philippines, Sara Duterte, is facing one of those.
The Senators Are Getting Ready
The people who will listen to the case and decide what happens are the senators. To do this serious job, they wear special black robes, just like judges. These robes are almost all ready — just waiting on two more to be delivered, according to Senate Secretary Renato Bantug Jr.
Each robe costs around ₱7,000, which is a lot! But they need them to look proper for the big event.
When Will the Trial Happen?
Senate President Chiz Escudero said the trial might start on July 30. Before that, on June 2, the official list of accusations (called the Articles of Impeachment) will be shown, and then the Senate will start acting like a court.
Why Is VP Sara on Trial?
Back in February, more than 200 lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted to impeach (or try to remove) VP Sara Duterte. They sent their complaint to the Senate on the same day — but the Senate was already taking a break, so they haven’t started the trial yet.
VP Sara Fights Back
VP Sara says the impeachment complaint is not fair. She and her lawyers have gone to the Supreme Court to ask for the whole case to be stopped.
Other lawyers and groups also agree and have filed their own requests to stop the trial. One lawyer even asked the Supreme Court to tell the Senate to start the trial right away.
So, right now, everyone is waiting — the robes are almost ready, the dates are set, and the big question is: Will the trial really happen?
