Marcos in Malaysia: What Awaits Him at the ASEAN Summit?

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. touched down in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday afternoon, ready to take part in the 47th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit and its related meetings.

The President’s plane landed in Malaysia’s bustling capital at around 2:50 p.m., marking the start of a crucial diplomatic journey for the Philippines.

Before his departure from Villamor Air Base in Pasay City, President Marcos spoke with conviction about the country’s role in the region.

“As always, our participation in the ASEAN Summit reaffirms our dedication to deepening regional cooperation and advancing the well-being of every Filipino and the entire Southeast Asian community,” he said.

The President emphasized that the Philippines remains steadfast in promoting peace, unity, and respect for international law.

“I will continue to champion our advocacies in promoting an open, inclusive, and rules-based international order, and for the peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law,” he added.

During the summit, Marcos is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings with other world leaders and formally accept the chairmanship of ASEAN for 2026 — a significant milestone for the country.

ASEAN currently includes the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar. Timor-Leste is set to officially join the regional bloc on Sunday, marking a new chapter for Southeast Asian cooperation.

As the summit unfolds, all eyes are on how the Philippines will help shape the region’s future under President Marcos’ leadership.
