On Friday, former U.S. President Donald Trump said something big: He believes he can solve the conflict with North Korea.
At a special meeting inside the Oval Office (that’s the President’s office in the White House), Trump was talking about how he’s trying to help fix problems around the world. A reporter asked him if he had written a new letter to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
Trump didn’t really answer directly. Instead, he said,
“I’ve had a good relationship with Kim Jong Un. We get along really great. So, we’ll see what happens.”
Then, he added something very dramatic:
“If there’s going to be a fight, I don’t think it will involve us.”
That made people even more curious. What kind of fight was he talking about? Is there really a new problem coming?
A news website in South Korea, NK News, said North Korea had refused to accept a letter from Trump earlier this month. That made people wonder: Did Trump actually write the letter, or not?
Back when Trump was still president from 2017 to 2021, he and Kim met three times. They even sent each other letters that Trump once called “beautiful.” For a while, it looked like they might finally bring peace, with Trump asking Kim to give up nuclear weapons.
But in 2019, the talks broke down, and North Korea walked away. Since then, they’ve made more nuclear weapons and missiles, and even became closer friends with Russia. Some reports say North Korea gave weapons and even soldiers to help Russia in the war against Ukraine.
Now in his second run for office, Trump still believes North Korea might talk to him again. The White House (where the U.S. President works) even said on June 11 that Trump would be open to hearing from Kim—but they didn’t say if he really sent a letter or not.
So now the world is watching.
💥 Will Kim Jong Un respond?
💥 Is Trump serious about solving the conflict?
💥 And can peace really happen this time?
Only time will tell.
