The Philippine Consulate General in Hong Kong is sounding the alarm for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) after reports of scam messages offering fake “ayuda” or assistance started circulating online.
According to a report by Super Radyo dzBB, the fraudulent messages are being spread through WhatsApp, Viber, and Facebook. They promise tempting offers like free groceries worth up to HK$5,000, free eye check-ups, and even free eyeglasses.
But behind the attractive promises lies a dangerous trap. The consulate warned that scammers use the personal details victims provide to open stooge accounts or fake accounts, which can then be linked to money laundering and other crimes.
In its advisory posted on Facebook, the consulate reminded Filipinos to stay vigilant:
“Scammers may lure you with promises of free gifts or rewards. Don’t give away your personal information. These could be used to open accounts for money laundering and other illegal activities. Always be cautious of random messages online.”
The consulate urged OFWs who receive such messages to report them immediately to the Anti-Deception Coordination Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force through its Anti-Scam Helpline 18222.
Filipinos may also reach out to the consulate directly for help by emailing the Assistance-To-Nationals Section at atn.hkpcg@gmail.com.
With scams becoming more sophisticated, the consulate reminded every OFW: stay alert, protect your information, and don’t let scammers take advantage of your hard work.
