The Philippines stood side by side with the world on Saturday, pledging to build a tourism industry that not only thrives today but also protects tomorrow.
As countries marked World Tourism Day 2025 on September 27, the celebration carried a powerful theme: “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation.” It is a reminder that tourism, when done right, can be a true agent of positive change.
In a heartfelt statement, the Department of Tourism (DOT) emphasized why this transformation is urgent.
“The storms we weather remind us why transformation must be sustainable — one that builds stronger communities, safeguards our natural and cultural heritage, and creates opportunities that endure,” the DOT said.
The agency vowed to champion responsible development, green practices, and inclusive growth — charting a future where tourism becomes both a driver of prosperity and a guardian of tomorrow.
Honoring Filipino Tourism Heroes
In a special video message, the DOT also paid tribute to the country’s unsung heroes — the tourism front-liners and stakeholders whose hard work continues to make the Philippines a top-of-mind destination for travelers worldwide.
A Global Voice for Change
At the global stage, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres echoed the same call. He described tourism as a powerful force that not only fuels development but also bridges cultures and preserves traditions.
But he also gave a strong warning:
“Tourism can also damage the very places and communities it celebrates. As the world faces climate breakdown and rising inequalities, we need bold, urgent, and sustainable action that puts people and planet first.”
Guterres outlined what this means in real terms — investing in education and skills, especially for women, youth, and marginalized groups; supporting micro, small, and medium enterprises; and pushing climate action by cutting emissions, conserving biodiversity, and protecting fragile ecosystems.
A Shared Mission
The Philippines’ commitment mirrors this global mission: to ensure that every tourist arrival contributes to long-term prosperity without compromising the country’s natural beauty and cultural soul.
As the world reflects on this year’s World Tourism Day, one message rings clear — tourism must transform, not just for us, but for generations yet to come.
