MANILA — The Philippines is set to shine on the global culinary stage. The Department of Tourism (DOT) announced Wednesday that the country has been chosen to host the 10th United Nations Tourism World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism in 2026.
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco called this recognition a reflection of the Philippines’ emergence as a global gastronomy hub.
“The Philippines is the perfect venue for the 2026 UN Tourism World Gastronomy Forum, where the world can gather to share, taste, and celebrate food as a bridge between cultures. More importantly, this recognition places our country at the forefront of global gastronomy and sustainable tourism,” she said.
A Global Gathering of Culinary Leaders
The forum will bring together chefs, innovators, policymakers, and advocates from over 150 countries to discuss how food tourism can drive inclusive growth, sustainability, and cultural preservation.
UN Tourism Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili praised the Philippines for its commitment to gastronomy tourism, highlighting initiatives that strengthen local food systems, empower youth and women, and celebrate Filipino culinary heritage.
“The Philippines is an exceptional host for this flagship global event,” Pololikashvili said.
Food as a Driver of Tourism and Growth
Gastronomy is more than just a feast; it’s a major engine for tourism and economic growth. According to the 2024 Philippine Tourism Satellite Account (PTSA):
-
Food and beverage services accounted for 8.04% of Tourism Direct Gross Value Added.
-
These services made up 17.1% of inbound tourism spending.
-
The tourism sector employs 6.75 million Filipinos, most in food, culinary, and hospitality industries.
Frasco emphasized that the Philippines’ success in gastronomy tourism is a story of empowerment and sustainability.
“From the first regional gastronomy forum in Cebu to our partnership with Michelin and the growing global recognition of Filipino cuisine, our message is clear — food is not only a feast for the palate but also a force for empowerment and sustainability,” she said.
A Legacy of Culinary Recognition
This 2026 forum builds on the Philippines’ growing global reputation in gastronomy tourism. In 2024, the country hosted the first-ever UN Tourism Regional Forum on Gastronomy Tourism in Cebu, producing the Cebu Call to Action on Gastronomy Tourism as a Driver for Sustainable Development.
“Hosting the World Gastronomy Forum in 2026 is proof that the Philippines continues to rise as a leader in showcasing the power of food to drive tourism,” Frasco added.
With this milestone, the Philippines not only celebrates its rich culinary heritage but also cements its role as a global beacon of sustainable, culture-driven tourism.
