MANILA – Darkness fell across parts of Luzon on Sunday night as Super Typhoon Uwan unleashed powerful winds and heavy rain, cutting off electricity for more than 276,000 Meralco customers.
Just hours earlier, the number stood at 184,000 — a sign of how fast Uwan’s fury spread across the region.
According to Meralco’s 9 p.m. update, crews have been working round-the-clock to restore power in Laguna, Cavite, Metro Manila, Batangas, Quezon, and Bulacan, where many families spent the night without light or electricity.
“We appeal for patience as we prioritize the safety of both our customers and our teams on the ground,” Meralco said in a statement.
“Power will be restored as soon as weather conditions permit.”
But the impact of the outage wasn’t limited to homes. The Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) also felt the strain of Uwan’s wrath. Both northbound and southbound elevators at the Quezon Avenue and Magallanes Stations were temporarily shut down due to power fluctuations.
All escalators at the Magallanes Station were also affected, the MRT-3 announced, adding that its maintenance teams are conducting safety checks and will resume operations once it’s safe to do so.
As Super Typhoon Uwan continues to move across the country, Filipinos brace themselves for a long night, holding onto hope that the lights — and calm — will soon return.
