YELLOW ALERT for Visayas Grid on Aug. 16, 2026!

Caution in the Visayas: A Yellow Alert for Power Supply

On Sunday afternoon, August 16, 2026, an important message was announced for the residents of the Visayas region: the power grid would be placed on yellow alert. This alert is a signal of caution, prompted by a concerning dip in power reserves. The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) reported that from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. that evening, the grid would be under close observation as some power plants were currently offline.

This situation arose because the available capacity was a mere 2,525 megawatts, but the peak demand soared to 2,480 megawatts. What does this mean in real terms? A razor-thin margin that could leave many homes and businesses in a tight spot if the demand increased unexpectedly.

Why the Yellow Alert?

The yellow alert was triggered by several significant factors. Notably, two large coal plants in the Visayas are currently unavailable, further straining the power supply. To add to the urgency, power imports from Mindanao have been limited, leaving the Visayas grid with even fewer resources.

The NGCP shared that seven power plants were on forced outages during this critical time. Some of these plants had been offline for weeks, or even months. Here’s a quick look at how extensive the outages are:

– One plant has been out since July,
– Three since June,
– Seven since May,
– One since March,
– And others dating back to 2021.

All this has resulted in a staggering 892.6 megawatts of power being unavailable to the Visayas grid.

What Does This Mean for You?

A yellow alert isn’t just a technical term; it’s a warning that we must take seriously. It means that the operating margin of the grid is too low to ensure stability in the face of unexpected demand or outages.

The Department of Energy is working diligently, alongside concerned agencies and generation companies, to expedite the restoration of these affected facilities. Their goal? To stabilize our power supply and ensure that the lights stay on for families and businesses alike.

As you prepare for the evening, consider how this may impact daily life in the Visayas. A little awareness goes a long way toward understanding the challenges we face as a community.

Stay tuned for updates, stay safe, and let’s work together to navigate through this yellow alert with resilience and hope. Remember, every small effort makes a big difference!
