Europe is preparing “pretty precise plans” for a multinational troop deployment to Ukraine—part of a wider security guarantee for the war-torn nation, with support from the United States.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed this in an interview with the Financial Times, published Sunday.
“President Trump reassured us that there will be American presence as part of the backstop,” von der Leyen said. “That was very clear and repeatedly affirmed.”
A Massive Deployment in the Works
The plan could see tens of thousands of European-led troops deployed, according to the report. These forces would be reinforced by U.S. support, including command-and-control systems, intelligence, and surveillance assets.
The arrangement, sources said, was reached last month during a high-level meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and senior European leaders.
Key Leaders to Meet in Paris
The discussions are far from over. On Thursday, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and von der Leyen are set to meet in Paris. French President Emmanuel Macron will host the talks, which aim to push forward the security roadmap for Ukraine.
The upcoming meeting underscores the urgency among European and U.S. allies to solidify long-term security guarantees for Ukraine, even as the conflict continues to reshape global stability.
