US Suspends Temporary Legal Status for Myanmar Citizens

WASHINGTON, US — A major shift is coming for Myanmar citizens living in the United States.

On Monday, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security announced that the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Myanmar will be terminated, effective in 60 days.

The TPS designation, which allowed nearly 4,000 Myanmar nationals to live and work legally in the U.S., was set to expire on Tuesday. But the notice confirms it will now end permanently.

“After reviewing country conditions and consulting with appropriate U.S. government agencies, the secretary determined that Burma no longer meets the conditions for Temporary Protected Status,” the notice published in the Federal Register stated.

This decision reverses the 18-month extension granted under the Biden administration in May 2024, which had allowed Myanmar nationals to stay until November 25.

Since taking office, President Trump’s administration has revoked TPS for several countries as part of its immigration policies. Myanmar is now the latest country affected.

For thousands of families who have built lives in the United States, the clock is ticking.
The next 60 days will be critical as they plan their next steps amid uncertainty about their future in the country.
