WASHINGTON, D.C. – US President Donald Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba stood united against China’s actions in the South China Sea, calling them dangerous and provocative.
During a high-stakes meeting in Washington on Friday, both leaders strongly opposed China’s increasing military presence and its sweeping claims over almost the entire South China Sea.
“The two leaders reaffirmed their strong opposition to the PRC’s unlawful maritime claims, militarization of reclaimed features, and threatening and provocative activities in the South China Sea,” the official joint statement declared.
Why Are the US & Japan Concerned?
China claims nearly the entire South China Sea, despite multiple countries having their own territorial rights.
Beijing has been building artificial islands and military bases, increasing tensions in the region.
Neighboring countries feel threatened, as these actions could impact freedom of navigation and trade.
What Happens Next?
The US and Japan have vowed to work together to counter China’s growing influence and protect the freedom of navigation in one of the world’s most vital waterways.
With tensions rising, the world watches closely to see how China responds to this powerful alliance against its actions.
