Typhoon Danas Slams Taiwan With Fierce Winds, Hundreds Hurt

A very strong typhoon named Danas slammed into southern Taiwan early Monday, bringing record-breaking winds and pouring rain. Sadly, two people died, and more than 330 others got hurt.

📍 What’s Special About This Typhoon?

Taiwan often gets typhoons, but here’s the twist:
Most storms hit the eastern side of the island—an area full of mountains and fewer people.
But Typhoon Danas hit the west side this time, where there are lots of homes, schools, and businesses.

That’s why it caused so much damage.

đź’¨ How Strong Was Danas?

  • Winds reached a speed of 220 kilometers per hour in Yunlin County. That’s super fast—like a race car!

  • Trees were ripped from the ground.

  • Street signs were blown away.

  • Over 700 trees and road signs fell across towns and cities in western Taiwan.

🚨 What Happened to the People?

  • One person died after a tree fell on their car.

  • Another passed away because their respirator stopped working during a power outage.

Over 330 people were injured in the chaos—some from flying debris and accidents caused by strong winds.

⚡ City Life Was Shaken

  • Power was knocked out in more than 500,000 homes.

  • Businesses and schools closed to keep everyone safe.

  • Over 300 flights were cancelled, both local and international.

  • The high-speed rail service that runs north to south across the island also slowed down.

đź’» Good News for Tech

In Tainan, there’s a special place called the Tainan Science Park, where giant tech companies like TSMC make electronics and chips.
🌟 The good news: No major damage was reported there.

🇨🇳 What’s Next for Danas?

After blasting Taiwan, Danas weakened and is now heading toward eastern China. The provinces of Zhejiang and Fujian are now on high alert.

  • Over 180 construction sites—including wind farms—have been shut down for safety.

  • 121 passenger ships and 64 ferry routes have been suspended.

  • The typhoon may hit land again late on Tuesday night between Taizhou and Fuzhou.

🧠 A Message from the President

Taiwan’s President, Lai Ching-te, posted on Facebook:

“This typhoon is unusual. All of Taiwan will feel the effects. Everyone must prepare and stay safe.”
