Trillanes : Proposed lifestyle check on Paolo Duterte, Mans Carpio, a cover-up

This was how Senator Antonio Trillanes IV called the recommendation made by Senate Blue Ribbon Committee Chair Richard Gordon for Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte and Attorney Mans Carpio to undergo lifestyle check.

The Blue Ribbon Committee’s recommendation stemmed from the Senate inquiry on the controversial Bureau of Customs (BOC) smuggling of P6.4-billion worth of shabu shipment from China in which Duterte and Carpio are being implicated for.

Trillanes pointed out that suspected drug pushers and users are killed on the streets, while personalities like Duterte and Carpio are merely placed under lifestyle check.

Trillanes added that if Senator Gordon is seriously considering finding out the root of the issue, he shouldn’t have immediately ended the Senate probe and absolved Duterte and Carpio.

The 52-page draft committee report also recommends a widespread reform in the BOC; filing of criminal cases against all BOC Command Center officials and other personalities, including former Customs Commissioner Nicanor Faeldon; an in-depth investigation on the personalities involved in the entry of the multi-billion peso shabu shipment; and for the National Bureau of Investigation to conduct said lifestyle check on Vice Mayor Duterte and Atty. Carpio.

Senate Majority Leader Vicente Sotto III, on the other hand, believes conducting a lifestyle check on the presidential son should not be an issue.

“With or without the chismis, pwede namang i-life style check ang lahat ng public officials, ewan ko lang kung bagay kay Atty. Carpio yun, dahil hindi naman siya public official,” Sotto said.

He added it is still possible for the said committee draft report to be revised.

“Sa plenary mismo kapag pinaguusapan na yan kung ano ang mga kulang pwede naming idagdag, kung ano yung mga sobra, pwede naming i-amend at ibawas,” he said.

Senator Gordon had earlier reiterated that that he is not being biased towards anybody in the hearing, especially with the side of the first family.
